This branch has developed from the iron industry and the mechanical engineering based on it. After the beginnings of iron production in the Middle Ages, the boom and industrialization began at the end of the 18th century and then especially in the 19th century. Iron-bearing rocks, water power and wood from the forests provided good conditions for the development of this branch of industry, combined with the names of Hacke and Gienanth, the so-called “Krupps” of the Palatinate.
